Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

The car that produced by German automaker Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series seems to be the constant talk of the town in the automotive world these days. The car has been spotted everywhere from the streets of Stuttgart to the famous Nurburgring test track in Germany.

Mercedes-Benz has already admitted that the SL 65 Black Series will be the most extreme Benz ever built. Power will come from a 6.0L V12 twin-turbo engine producing 670-hp with a peak torque of 738 lb-ft. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with two Sport shift programs with the second putting out quicker gear changes.

So how fast will it go from rest to 62? According to our friends over at CAR that have the low-down on this beast, the SL 65 AMG Black Series will have 0-62 times of under 4.2 seconds with top speed electronically limited to 200mph.

The car will make its debut later this year with sales to start in the fall. Pricing is expected to be over $225,000. It will have a imperfect production run of 350 units.

2009 Mercedes-Benz A-Class

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

Automaker Mercedes exposed the 2009 Mercedes-Benz A-Class at the “Auto Mobil International” motor show in Leipzig. Presented in a range of five-door or three-door edition in the spring of 2008, the 2009 A-Class gets a facelift consisting of a new front end, new headlamps, a modified rear-bumper and new tail lights.

Similar to the 2009 B-Class, the new-generation A-Class also gets the ECO start/stop feature for the first time in the A 150 and the A 170 models, reducing fuel-consumption by 9 percent.
This car also revealed a new three door model, the A 160 CDI. Powered by an 82-hp engine, the A 160 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, gets a combined fuel-economy of 52mpg. The A 150 BlueEFFICIENCY is powered by 95-hp engine that gives it a combined fuel-economy of 40mpg.

SLC Supercar by Mercedes Benz

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

Germany Automaker Mercedes Benz will be ending production of its SLR McLaren Roadster later next year to make room for its future SLC supercar. We now have more info on the car from the good folks at AutoCar who state that the upcoming SL65 Black Series will share main components with the SLC.

This supercar will certainly be developed my AMG who is planning on using the same axels on the SLC that they will use on the SL65 Black Series. Though, unlike the Black Series SL, the SLC will use an aluminum space frame in order to eliminate weight and added the strength of the car. Also see major use of carbon fiber as Mercedes moves to building an alloy car for the first time.

The two will also share AMG’s 6.2L V8 engine developing well over 600-hp. Transmission for both cars is expected to come from the recently launched SL63 AMG with a 7-speed MCT gearbox. AutoCar says that there is also a possibility of a BMW M-style electronic differential.

To boost aerodynamics, the SLC and the Black Series SL65 will feature a pop-up spoiler that will rise at speeds above 60mph.

2010 Mercedes-Benz B-Class with fuel-cell drive

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class with fuel-cell drive has successfully completed its winter testing in northern Sweden with flying colours. At double-digit, below-zero temperatures, the zero-emission drive showed what it could do in the comprehensive test programmes. For example, cold start activities was subjected to thorough scrutiny. Even though Daimler Research had already found a technical solution to the fuel cell’s start capability at -25 degrees Celsius, the engineers’ focus here was on the interaction between the different elements under real-life winter conditions. A further focus of the winter tests was on roadholding. This meant adapting the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) to the special conditions of a fuel-cell vehicle. A special feature in this context is that an electric motor exhibits different speed governing behaviour to that of standard combustion engines.
Dr. Thomas Weber, Daimler AG board member with responsibility for Research and Development at Mercedes Benz Cars, drew positive conclusions from the testing: “The results of the winter tests proved that we are on the right track with this innovative drive concept and have taken another important step on the road to reaching production standard. As with the standard test programmes for conventional vehicles, we will be subjecting the B-Class F-CELL to further rigorous testing over the next few months.”

The first series Mercedes will be launching with a local, zero-emission fuel-cell drive in the summer of 2010. Small-series production of the B-Class F-CELL will commence in early 2010. A new generation of fuel-cell drive will be used to power this innovative vehicle. It is much more compact, while at the same time offering greater performance and is completely suitable for everyday use.

The maximized fuel-cell system that Mercedes-Benz presented in 2005 in the F 600 HYGENIUS research vehicle forms the technical basis. This extremely compact fuel-cell system operates much more efficiently than previous generations. The newly designed “stack”, the fuel cell module, is roughly 40 percent smaller, yet generates 30 percent greater power, along with a 16 percent reduction in consumption compared to the F-Cell A-Class. The system also shows a good cold start capability, thanks to innovations such as the electric turbocharger for air supply, and the new humidification and demisting system.

Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

The Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG present swell up straight-line speed and a comfy interior but disadvantaged by a rough ride and appallingly low fuel economy. The performance arm of Mercedes-Benz AMG, seems to be on a mission. It wants to expand its fearsome reach to every corner of the Benz lineup, as well as areas that appear to defy logic.

For the common of buyers, the ML350 SUV gets around quite smartly with its 268-horsepower V6 engine. Its $44,825 base price isn’t too painful, and it’s even tolerable at the pump, with fuel economy rated at 15 miles per gallon city/20 mpg highway. The diesel-powered ML320 CDI, for $1,000 more, boosts mileage to 18/24 mpg. (It delivered the highest tested fuel economy we’ve ever seen in a midsize SUV, at a combined 24 mpg over a week’s worth of driving.)

At the ML’s heart is a 6.2-liter V8 engine that appears in other vehicles in Mercedes’ AMG line, like the S63 AMG sedan. In the ML63, it’s tuned to deliver 503 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.
Just how strong is it? How about 0-60 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds, faster than many sports cars, and nearly two full seconds quicker than the V6 model. Hammer the gas at any speed, and prepare for giddy thrills as the Benz howls to its 7,200 rpm peak, leaving everything in its battleship wake. This magnificent hand-built engine spurs the big Benz to 120 or 130 mph with ridiculous ease, and on to an electronically limited, 155-mph top speed.

The engine is well-mated to Mercedes’ brilliant new seven-speed automatic transmission, which features comfort, sport, and manual-shift settings. While the transmission is nearly faultless, we’d like to see Mercedes rework the steering-wheel shift buttons on its performance models. The little plastic triangles currently used seem like an afterthought on such sport-oriented machines.

The ML 63 rides on a special AMG version of Mercedes’ Airmatic suspension, here with adjustable ride height. Mercedes’ adaptive damping system smooths the bumps and keeps the body flat and composed in corners. Between the thin 20-inch tires and the suspension’s sport setting, the ride was noticeably harsh for rear-seat occupants, making the comfort setting the default choice for most situations.
