The iPhone 1.1.4 firmware update

Posted by bensto in SOFTWARE on 02 27th, 2008

it’s running as rumored. The iPhone 1.1.4 firmware update should be ready to you when you next connect your iPhone to iTunes. The file is 162MB, and the readme just lists “bug fixes” as far as changes go.

Multiple sources are claiming the ZiPhone jailbreaking software still works, but the ZiPhone site itself warns not to upgrade, as they want to test further. And, the site warns, you won’t get any support if you do upgrade (heh, heh).

The question is, does this update support the SDK (which was supposed to show up today but still hasn’t)? This is rather a hefty update for bug fixes, so that seems to be a decent possibility.

Mozilla Thunderbird 3.0

In an challenge to revitalize Thunderbird in version 3.0, Mozilla has released “Mozilla Messaging” which promises significant improvements to the email client—like calendar integration, better search, and a chat app. While the core focus will still be on email, Mozilla seems committed to developing a product that will offer a broader range of communications tools. Whether or not it will be good enough to get Thunderbird back on track remains to be seen.

Lojack for iPhone

Using Twitter, the iPhone can send periodic updates telling exactly where it is in terms of the location of its nearest cellphone tower. If your phone is lost or stolen, just check the Twitter update page and grab the latest latitude and longitude, which you can then use to somehow track down your phone. We’re not sure how well it’ll work in practice, but it’s better than nothing.

Still, how to get the location report to a place you can get it… but nobody else can… and without receiving a zillion SMSes? For this part of the puzzle, enter Twitter. Twitter dev Britt Selvitelle helped walk me through the setup for a private account that allows your iPhone to phone home but keeps the location data relatively secure.

Posted by bensto in SOFTWARE on 02 25th, 2008

Internet Browser software Mozilla Firefox has just pass 500 million downloads worldwide; it is an amazing significant statistic and we think everyone who works on the project should get a pat on the back. As if their contribution in creating a kick-ass browser was not enough to the world, the Mozilla team is celebrating by raising funds for 500 million grains of rice, which they will give away to poverty stricken nations.
In honor of the 500 million download mark we’re celebrating by raising 500,000,000 grains of rice in one day to help feed the world’s poor. Since we have reached the milestone, it is time to flock to freerice.com and attempt to push the days total over 1/2 billion. This is just a foreshadow to where one day Firefox will be. Food for thought, uh, better yet, Food for Lives; if we reach 500 million grains of rice, that’s a direct contribution in feeding 25,000 people for one day! Donate now, http://freerice.com
