Nowday’s in-car entertainment choices, live, local digital TV still isn’t one of them. Even at home, digital television signals can break up if you wiggle the antenna, and you can’t get a picture at all in a moving vehicle. But immediately, you perhaps see flawless video even if your set is barreling down the road at more than 100 mph.
Produce by LG Electronics and Samsung. They have both figured out how to send video to a moving target, like a headrest TV or a mobile phone. The main key tool is overcoming a problem called dynamic multipath, the ever-changing ricochet of radio waves as they bounce off buildings and moving car. This can cause the same television signal to hit an antenna dozens of times which confounds the TV tuner and leads to a frozen or black screen.
The new mobile broadcasts embed within the transmission extra code that the tuner uses to determine how the signal got jumbled and then re-create the original data. It works: Video played flawlessly during our road tests in traffic-choked downtown Las Vegas and on a nearby highway.
Both Samsung’s technology, called A-VSB, and LG’s, called MPH, are compatible with today’s digital-television standards, so stations can slip them in alongside their high-definition broadcasts. Different with other mobile-television offerings, like FLO TV on Verizon cellphones, you probably won’t need a subscription to tune in. And you can get the full range of programming offered on standard TV, including local news, sports and weather. The U.S. television standards-setting body, the ATSC, is currently testing the LG and Samsung technologies and may approve one this summer. That could get the launch rolling by mid-2009.

If Compared with the other of Samsung’s U.S. models, the SGH-i450 breaks the company’s slim and silver design. Yes, it’s a slider phone, but it’s somewhat hefty (3.98 inches by 2.05 inches by 0.71 inch; 3.69 ounces) and it sports an eye-catching blue and white color scheme. It’s certainly a nice change and it befits the phone’s multimedia prowess. As we said earlier, it has a dual-slider design that’s similar to the Nokia N95. If you slide the front face up, you’ll expose the numeric keypad. If you slide it down, you’ll see the music touch control.
The SGH-i450 has a bright, vibrant display that supports 262,000 colors and measures 2.4 inches (240×320 pixels). It shows everything well, from text to graphics to photos, and it offers an intuitive Symbian-powered (Series 60) menu interface. You can adjust the brightness, the backlighting time, and the font size.
The SGH-i450 offers two 2-megapixel cameras. The main shooter faces the rear of the phone. It takes pictures in five resolutions, from 1,600×1,200 down to 320×240. Features include a flash, light metering, a digital zoom, a self-timer, a sequence mode, three white balance settings, a brightness control, and four color tones.
